Steve Chien

Senior Research Scientist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech

Biography

Dr. Steve Chien is Head of the Artificial Intelligence Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. He has led use of AI software for numerous space missions: Autonomous Sciencecraft/EO-1, Sensorweb, WATCH/MER, IPEX, and the ESA’s Rosetta Orbiter. Dr. Chien has received numerous awards for his efforts in AI and Space. He has been recognized four times in the NASA Software of the Year competition (1999, 1999, 2005, and 2011). He has received four NASA medals for his work in AI for space (1997, 2000, 2007, 2015).

This talk will cover recent advances to use AI for orbital and surface missions as well as future mission concepts based on AI capabilities to explore hostile, unknown, dynamic environments, ending with the key role AI must play in the search for life beyond Earth.

We are entering the era of AI and the topic has long left the research labs and spilled into newspaper headlines and mainstream policy agendas.
